poem 8: dying

April 9, 2007

Sagging lips let slip
   drool and food
The intestines deny control
   the body shuts down

Every body lucky enough
   goes through such changes
Every one who lives this long
will know how to fade out

First the body
   then the mind
And with any perseverence
   the soul remains
Until the last flicker
   the last glimmer
   of hope and light.
