love, hatred, and the propensity for compassion 40509

April 7, 2009

You, over there.
Behind the plate glass sipping your coffee
You, reading the newspaper,
At the table, quiet and demure.
You, speaking in hushed tones to yourself.
You.

There are words I want to express to you
So simple they would be alone
So simple, yet complex like DNA
For they make me up, whole
And to give those words out of my mouth
Into your eyes
Would be like pulling the yarn threads that bind
My flesh to my bone
And pulling myself into a puddle.

There are words I want out of my head
So strong the feeling, so strong the words
That lions and tigers cower
Soldiers abandon stations
Winds change directions
And babies stop nursing in their presense
Fretful creature, small now, and invisible.
The comparison is too vast to call it vast.

The words out of my lips
Compared to your lips, there on your cup
Are tiny whimpering tidebreaks
Defenseless against what they hold back
And what they stand up against.
These lips are mine, and part of me
Thus, I am not ready for my own battles.

Equestrian words
Oncological words
Epistemic
Histrionic
Valorous
Jocund
Liberal words

All vital signs of mine are less vital than yours
Hands reaching for you are less reaching than yours are
Stars shining in my eyes are less bright than in you
Courage is diminished to nothing in your courage
Manifestation is imagining to your reality
The universe is a pearl on sand on your smallest planet
Breadth, width, depth are all single points on a page

And yours are unities, forgivenesses, and galaxies

jazz

April 6, 2009

Why does it seem like I’m the only saxophonist on the planet who doesn’t like (and sometimes barely appreciate) jazz? Is it so wrong to just want to listen to rock and new age and celtic stuff? Blech!

jaxon 40409

April 6, 2009

Politest of all boys.
He will be steward to Kings,
If not a King himself.
Calm face, firefly eyes,
There is no thing beyond his doing

His simple instructions will
Take nations to victory.
His steady grasp of his mother
Will one day hold a pen over a bill,
Or a sword over a foe,
Or the hand of his own daughter.

Free to wander with his mind,
He will be the artist of a resistance;
A revolutionary.
He will grow to move continents.
He will bear the giants that shoulder the earth.
After long days of grace and power,
He will retire to a villa where his kids love him
And his one true love will have his gaze.

He is the darlingest, the charmingest.
Gather your men,
A coronation is coming.

youth and anonymity 40309

April 4, 2009

Short skirts and hair bows eluded me
And there were few things I wanted more
But in that foolish moment, where youth and anonymity
Should ever reside
I wanted nothing more than her attention.
I had discovered a new kind of nakedness,
And I was wanton.
Silk boxers could not contain me,
Nor herald see me coming.
No impulse greater in that moment than captivity
And a firm hand.
Now, I snicker at myself.

goodbye beard 40209

April 4, 2009

Pizzicato shower, trickling over my back, tiny pinpoints of water
And the crescendo of heat; I must sweat to finish bathing.
I’ve removed all but the last vestige of testosterone’s prominent vantage.
And now, I am naked as oboes.
A chill day, this will be my undoing; newborn skin is always coldest
Even colder when a ringing wind cymbals my face.

Presto! Presto! Out of the air!

iowans can get gay-married

April 3, 2009

Okay, so the title is a farce, but the truth of it is, Iowa has decided to lift the ban on gay marriage. What a wonderful day! I might just celebrate it by getting married myself…

What I want to point out is this makes Iowans of most configurations now able to have a family. I’ve not always been one to want kids, but I know plenty of people who do and happiness is a good thing.

Phil Plait over at Bad Astronomy tells it like it is on the issue of what a family is and why the law should not get in the way of that. I agree with him whole-heartedly.

Congratulations, Iowa. You just took two steps forward. You may now pass GO.

what is what 40109

April 3, 2009

what is what
candor is noise is light is sound
and my arm is the battalion sweeping through the air to wipe out
an army of water with a sword that is a towel
what is what
and up is when I stand to pull pants over legs
and shirt over head
and what is when I have keys in hand
and I’ve made my own food
what is what
is when I’m driving myself to work
and making my own decisions and talking like a king
and what is a deck of cards that I spent $12 on
and what are glasses that I don’t have to wear
and a birth certificate I adventured for
what is books of knowledge and stolen software
what is what
its being adult and growing up
that’s what

blizzard warning 32909

April 2, 2009

A crest, a mound over a gently rolling landscape,
Pushing up just slightly,
So barely,
The smallest shade of its zenith is invisible.
Here, bare feet on concrete.

Hands don’t want to reach in.
Fingers don’t want chill.
Mouth wants no natural refreshment.
Skin wants only warmth.

From my window, sideways flurries
Alternate with sideways blusters
Caressing horizontal automobiles
And packing vertical drifts on windows and doors.

Hands keep typing.
Cup keeps emptying.
Steam keeps rising.
Fire keeps popping.

Not a single degree outside this bunker.
Not a soul seen for hours.
Fretting not about what to do with the time.
Just bundling and bundling and bundling.
And looking forward to the morning shine.

untitled 40109

April 1, 2009

I puzzle piece the pains in my heart
And pull the plug on verbage there.
For once, I was silent;
And now, am a flowering spring
It is not hurting, but yearning, that compels.
